Harmony in Christ by Pastor Paul Becker

Writer: First Pres BakerstownFirst Pres Bakerstown

Pastor Paul delivered a comprehensive sermon on Philippians 2:1-11, titled "Harmony in Christ." He explained the importance of scripture-guided worship, detailing how the order of worship at FPCB is intentionally structured to reflect Biblical principles and historical Christian traditions. This includes elements such as acknowledging God's attributes, confessing sins, receiving the Lord’s assurance of pardon, and hearing the Word proclaimed. The explanation was offered for the benefit of people who aren’t familiar with FPCB’s practice of worship. It also served to remind church members why we worship the way we do. A church that is not united in an understanding and appreciation for the way it worships is a church that will be fractured in other ways.

Delving into the scripture reading, the Apostle Paul exhorted the Philippian church on themes of unity, humility, and selflessness. He emphasized the importance of "tenderness and compassion" in Christian relationships and the need to "value others above yourselves.” Pastor Paul connected these instructions to the Prayer of Confession recited earlier in the service, demonstrating how the liturgy of FPCB reinforces Biblical teachings.

The strength of the scripture lesson is a Christological hymn found in Philippians 2:6-11. Pastor Paul explained how this hymn, likely used in early Christian worship, teaches profound truths about Christ's nature and mission. He emphasized that Jesus, "being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage” but instead took on the nature of a servant. Jesus’ example of humility and sacrifice serves as the ultimate model for believers to follow in their relationships with one another.

Pastor Paul then applied these truths to the lives of believers, calling them to emulate Christ's servanthood and sacrificial love. He cited Jesus' words from John 13:14-15, "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." This servant attitude is essential for maintaining unity and harmony within the church.

The sermon concludes with a powerful reminder of Christ's command to "Love one another as I have loved you" (John 15:12). Pastor Paul challenged the congregation to live out this love sacrificially, even when it's costly or inconvenient. He emphasizes that no follower is greater than their master, and as such, believers are called to submit humbly to Christ's teachings and example.

Throughout the sermon, Pastor Paul maintained a tone of pastoral care and Biblical authority, weaving together scriptural exposition, practical application, and theological reflection. He consistently points listeners back to Christ as the ultimate example and source of power for Christian living and unity.

It's a great day to live the Gospel!

God willing, we hope to see you on Sundays!
