Scripture Reading: Romans 5:1-11

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ...” (Romans 5:1)

We’ve all had that momentary spike of adrenaline at the store exit when the security alarm chirps. Even if you haven't done a thing wrong, your heart jumps. You instinctively reach into your pocket or bag, searching for that small, crumpled slip of paper: the receipt. The receipt is your proof. It says the price has been met, the transaction is closed, and you are free to walk out those doors with your head held high.

In Romans 5, Paul describes a spiritual transaction. We owed a debt of sin we could never settle, and the "price" was a life we couldn't pay. But Jesus stepped into the checkout line for us. On the cross, He paid the full price for our debt with His own life.

But how do we know the payment was actually accepted?

The Resurrection of Jesus is God’s "Paid in Full" receipt. If Jesus had remained in the grave, we might always wonder if the payment was enough. But when God raised Him from the dead, He stamped the transaction as "Settled." The Resurrection is the proof you carry in your heart that you no longer owe a debt to the Law or to your past.

The Shift in Thinking When you truly believe the debt is paid, your behavior changes—not out of a desperate attempt to pay God back, but out of the freedom of being debt-free.

  • From Fear to Peace: You don’t have to "shrink back" when you approach God. You have the receipt! You have peace with Him (v. 1).

  • From Performance to Love: We don't do "good things" to earn God’s favor; we do them because we already have it.

When you know the price was paid by Christ for you, you stop living like a spiritual beggar and start living like a child of the King. You aren't trying to buy your way into heaven; you’re living out of the abundance of a gift already given.

Reflect: When you feel the "alarm" of guilt or shame go off in your heart, do you reach for your own "good works" to prove your worth, or do you reach for the "receipt" of Christ's resurrection?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for paying a debt You did not owe because I had a debt I could not pay. Thank You for the Resurrection—my receipt of grace. Help me to live today not as someone trying to earn Your love, but as someone who is already completely and securely loved by You. Amen.

Action Step: Carry a small scrap of paper in your pocket today. Every time you touch it, let it remind you of the "receipt" of the Resurrection. Tell yourself: “The debt is paid. I am standing in grace.”
