The Savior We Welcome: Everlasting Father

Advent invites us to slow down and marvel at the names given to Jesus in Isaiah 9:6: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace—and one that often makes us pause: Everlasting Father. How can the Son be called Father?
This is not a contradiction but a glimpse into the beautiful complexity of Christ. The child in the manger is not only fragile and small—He is infinite and eternal. He is the Son who is the image of the Father's love. When we look at Him, we see the Father. (Jn 14:9)
A more literal rendering of this title is "Father of Eternity." Scripture confirms this truth: "In the beginning was the Word… all things were created through Him" (Jn 1:1–3). He is "the image of the invisible God" (Col 1:15) and "the radiance of God's glory" (Heb 1:3). The Incarnation—the eternal Creator stepping into time—shows us that God's mercy and steadfast love are not distant promises but present realities.
As the Everlasting Father, Jesus provides for us in ways no one else can. He gives life—abundant and eternal—through His sacrifice (Jn 10:10; Rom 6:23). Jesus protects us from the power of sin and death, fulfilling the ancient promise to crush the serpent's head (Gen 3:15; 1 Cor 15:57). Jesus teaches and leads us gently, inviting us to walk in His truth and learn from His heart (Jn 14:6; Mt 11:29). And when we grow weary, Jesus encourages us with His peace and strength, reminding us that He has overcome the world (Jn 16:33; Heb 12:2).
Jesus is not far away. He is your ever-present, loving Father, wrapping you in security and grace. This Advent, let this truth sink deep: The One who holds eternity holds you. Respond with praise, for the everlasting God has come near!
